Performance Physical Therapist

Dr. Zack Atwood is a sports physical therapist with a specialized focus on ACL rehabilitation and lower body injuries. His expertise spans hip, groin, ankle, Achilles, and knee conditions, including meniscus tears, MCL sprains, and patellar tendinopathies.

As a former collegiate soccer player at the University of Detroit Mercy and Wayne State University, Zack uses his athletic experience to guide athletes of all levels through recovery and performance optimization. His own injury setbacks ignited his passion for strength and conditioning, shaping his approach to rehab and recovery.

Zack holds a Bachelor’s in Kinesiology (Exercise Science) and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy, both from Wayne State University. His career was further shaped by a clinical rotation at Champion PT & Performance in Boston, where he trained under world-renowned sports physical therapists, refining his evidence-based approach to ACL rehab.

As the founder of Primal Recovery PT & Performance, Zack delivers personalized, cutting-edge care, integrating tools like force plate analysis and strength testing to craft tailored rehabilitation plans that accelerate recovery and improve performance.

Zack is also part-time faculty at Wayne State University’s Physical Therapy Program, where he teaches orthopedic courses and mentors students. He founded the ACL Institute, an online platform that connects global experts to provide world-class education on ACL rehabilitation to coaches, clinicians, and students. Zack has spoken at notable conferences, including the MPTA Fall Conference, MPTA Student Conclave, and ACL Mentorship Groups, sharing his expertise with industry peers.

When he’s not in the clinic, Zack enjoys traveling, hiking, biking, woodworking, and spending time with his wife, Paige (also a physical therapist), and their two dogs—Stella and Cricket

Performance Physical Therapist

Spencer is a sports physical therapist specializing in ACL rehabilitation. A former NCAA Division I soccer player at Oakland University, Spencer served as team captain during his junior and senior years, demonstrating leadership and dedication both on and off the field. While completing his undergraduate degree, he also won a national championship in 2019 with USL2 side Flint City Bucks.

Spencer earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Oakland University, where he cultivated a strong foundation in sports rehabilitation and advanced post-operative care. His expertise is enhanced by his certification in dry needling and ongoing coursework focused on ACL surgical techniques and evidence-based treatment protocols.

In addition to his clinical work, Spencer has extensive coaching experience, having worked with multiple clubs and academies to develop young athletes. This unique combination of high-level athletic experience, coaching, and clinical expertise allows Spencer to connect with athletes at every stage of their recovery and return to sport.
